The fight for fashion: SLAY documentary crowdfunds to counter animal abuse greenwashing

ANIMALS IN FASHION: SLAY - a feature-length documentary three years in the making that follows filmmaker Rebecca Cappelli as she travels to investigate the fashion world - has extended its fundraising target in an effort to cause a greater impact on one of the world’s most exploitative industries.

Is it acceptable to kill animals for fashion? To answer this very question, the groundbreaking documentary spans five continents to reveal a “harrowing story of greenwashing, mislabeling, animal cruelty and cover-ups from some of the world's major luxury fashion brands,” the SLAY team wrote on its Indiegogo campaign page.

Slay is a critically important and timely film about the greenwashing of fashion's dirty secrets," said Keegan Kuhn, co-director of Cowspiracy and What the Health, and co-producer of SLAY.

Other influential animal rights campaigners and experts involved in SLAY include, among others, Surge co-director Ed Winters, Samata Pattinson, Bandana Tewari, Dana Thomas, Joshua Katcher, Lucy Watson, Melanie Joy, Emma Hakansson, Alexi Lubomirski.

We’re always on the lookout for writers passionate about animal justice and plant-based advocacy. Whatever your level of experience, if you’ve written something, have a press release or a topic in mind, we want to hear about it.

The documentary includes footage gained from exclusive access to fur farms, tanneries, wool farms and skin processors in Australia, China, India, Europe, US and Brazil.

But the SLAY team expects heavy resistance from the fashion lobby and the millions of dollars it has at its disposal to greenwash the untold horrors of fur, wool and hide production, and convince the public and mainstream media into turning a blind eye to the many atrocities committed against animals, all so that humans might look good walking down the street.

“The main challenge we want to overcome now is to break outside of echo chambers and make a real difference for the animals, for the planet and people who live at the mercy of this industry,” said Cappelli. “To achieve that, we need your support to ensure we get journalists, fashion professionals and the mainstream audience in front of the film. Fashion has millions to greenwash the public, but with your help we can get the truth out and make a difference.”
